Summary
Plants etc. eaten when food was scarce.
In summer when food was scarce, people ate certain plants. They bloodlet the cattle by opening a vein in the animal's leg and made blood pudding. People gathered winkles, limpets, carrageen and dulse. They drank the water left over from the cooking. There was no means of fishing at first but they built 'cairidhean' [walls in the sea to trap fish when the tide went out]. The contributor used to hear people talk of the year of the potato blight when no food could be found.
