Summary

Creel-making.

The contributor left school at fourteen. He stayed at home working the family croft. They made their own creels, initially from heather, and he describes in detail how they were made. Later, when loaf baskets started coming to island, they took them apart and used the material for making creels. Heather was softened beside the fire to make it easier to work. Everyone had a creel. It was carried by rope round the shoulders. The contributor has seen horses carrying creels, mostly in other places.
