Summary

Loch Tay-side was well populated by crofters before the Clearances.

The dykes on the hill behind Morenish farm are old land boundaries. Before the Clearances there were no large farms and no extensive sheep-farming on Loch Tay-side. It was all crofts. The high price of wool caused the Clearances. Landlords thought it better to get big rents from a few big farmers than small rents from a lot of crofters. The Earl of Breadalbane organised the crofts on his land and tried to run them in an economic way. The crofters owned their houses, but not the land.
