Summary
Gaelic speaking in Killin; discouraged at school.
Bill Walker's parents and his brother spoke Gaelic. He did not because he was away in the Army for ten years. Everyone in Killin spoke Gaelic when he was a child, and there are still [1964] a few native speakers in the area. When he was at school, Gaelic was discouraged. People thought children would be disadvantaged if they could not speak good English. The schoolmaster, Mr Stevens, probably from Edinburgh, was strongly against Gaelic, but did not punish children for using it.
