Summary

Going to school, taught in English.

Each scholar had to bring a peat to school for the fire, but David MacLaren was so wee [little], his sister had to carry it for him. It was only a mile to the school. Later when he went to Drumtemple it was over three miles, winter and summer. They were not taught in Gaelic because "there was plenty of Gaelic in the country. There wasn't a hoose but there was Gaelic was spoken in it." The teachers were Gaelic speakers, including one incomer who learnt it. The Free Kirk had precenting [leading psalm-singing] in Gaelic. David MacLaren cannot read Gaelic, only speak it. His parents spoke only Gaelic.
