Summary

More people lived on Loch Tay-side in the past, but a few Gaelic-speaking families are left.

Until World War I there were still quite a few crofters on Loch Tay-side, in spite of the Clearances and the fact that many people emigrated to Canada from north Loch Tay-side. By the 1960s there were no real crofters left, only a few smallholders. There are still [1964] a few old native families, the MacDiarmids of Kiltyrie Farm, the MacGregors, also farmers, and Alastair Stewart of the Ben Lawers Hotel. Bill Walker thinks they are all Gaelic speakers, as is Miss MacLaren of Ardtalnaig.
