The contributor's father did not go to school. He died in 1919, aged 56. Her mother died in 1949, aged 82. Her brother also died in 1919, and her sister in 1939. The contributor looked after her sister's four children.
She was born in Kentangaval and moved to Vatersay when she was four and Kentangaval became overcrowded. A MacDonald from North Uist had all of Vatersay. He also had Sandray for sheep. Her father built a thatched house in Caolas. Curers had wooden houses.
