The contributor is descended from the MacNeils of Barra.
The contributor's family had Oronsay land latterly, which previously belonged to Sir John MacNeil. The contributor is not of MacNeil of Colonsay stock. He is descended from Iain a' Chuain, a Barra MacNeil. His boat was driven ashore on Colonsay by a storm when he was returning to Barra after a cattle raid. A pregnant woman aboard gave birth and they disembowelled a cow and put the mother and child inside the carcass to keep them warm.
