Summary
Clann Mhurchaidh Riabhaich and how MacKenzies from Reiff came to Coigach.
Eachann Ruadh MacKenzie in Gairloch had an illegitimate son (or a son from a previous marriage), Murchadh. His two legitimate sons were afraid that Murchadh would inherit the estate, and so they always made trouble for him. He had a knife at each elbow at the table to stop them pestering him, hence his name 'Murchadh Riabhach nan Corc'. Eachann went to Edinburgh to arrange for Murchadh to inherit the estate. In his absence, Murchadh lost patience with his half-brothers and plundered the estate. He fled and was pursued. There was a battle near Ullapool which Murchadh's side won. He and his followers settled in Assynt and Coigach. The contributor's great-grandmother was descended from them.
