Summary
People used to grind corn with a quern or a barley stone.
The contributor has never seen a quern but he has heard about it. He describes it and explains how it works. He also describes the barley stone and tells how it works. He tells a story about a certain woman who did not have much meal at home. Using a barley stone, she would quickly make barley meal so that she could have barley bread ready for a working man. There are plenty barley stones still [1962] to be seen.
