Summary
Michaelmas customs in South Uist.
Strùan was made at Michaelmas. St Michael is the patron saint of Uist - known as St. Michael of the horse races. Games and races would be held on Michaelmas. These celebrations are described.
The strùan would be made by the women from the first ripe sheaves of the harvest. They would harvest these sheaves in time for Michaelmas and grind the flour in a quern. The operation of the quern is explained. The custom of making struan was not so common as it once was.
The origin of strùan is then described - it supposedly originated at the time of the war in Heaven, when Lucifer and his followers were expelled by St Michael.
