Summary
A song air which the contributor's father and aunts attributed to a Norse rowing song from the time of Harald Fairhair [9th century]. They would sometimes use the air for hymns or work songs.
The contributor talks about how his forebears coped with rough seas in boats that were designed to ride the waves when the sail was dropped. When they went to gather eggs their cooking stove would sometimes go out and they had to live on raw fish for a day or so. The contributor's great-uncle was a pilot on coastal steamers.
