Summary

Gaelic and music at sea; survivals of Gaelic in Victoria, Australia.

The contributor heard plenty of Gaelic spoken at sea. There were seven speakers on his last ship, the 'City of Lucknow', trading to America and Australia on nine or ten month trips. The contributor was ship's carpenter. The seven had great sing-songs, and two Uist men, Donald MacLellan and Angus MacKay, played the pipes. The contributor mentions other Gaelic speakers in Australia and descendants who retain a few words.
