The following rhyme was said to children before they went to sleep to guard them from all evil:

Mary midder, haud dy haund roond aboot for sleepin baund,
Haad da lass an haad da wife, haad the bairns aa der life,
Mary midder, haud dy haund roond da bairns ower land.

The following rhyme was to protect children from trows [trolls, fairies]:

Hushaba minner's dattie, we shall pit the trows awa,
Broonie [brownie] sanna [shall not] get the bairn,
An if he comes the cocks'll craa.
