Summary
On Berneray in the 1920s, Gaelic was discouraged in the classroom, but spoken at home and in the playground.
When Roderick MacKillop was at school on Berneray, the emphasis was on English, and very little Gaelic was taught. He only spoke English in the classroom. At home and in the playground Gaelic was spoken. The headmaster, Lachie Macleod from Scalpay, was a terror. All the pupils were afraid of him.
