Summary

Guisers came at Hogmanay. As they went in one recited, "Here comes in Galoshin, Galoshin is my name." They formed a ring with one in the middle who pretended to get shot. The verse the guisers sang finished, "Rise up, Jock, and sing a song." At this, the 'dead' person got up and sang:

Once I was dead, sir, but now I am alive,
Blessed be the doctor that made me to revive.
Blessed be the mistress of the house, the master also,
And all the little bairnies that roon the table go,
Wi their pockets fu o money and their baskets full o cheer,
Success until yer guidwife, a happy New Year.

Wat Ramage repeats this song at the request of Emily Lyle, and changes the words of the last line to, "Success untae yer guiser." Children used to perform this in groups of about half a dozen, the boys dressed as girls and vice versa. Wat last took part about 60 years before at Westruther.
