Summary
Spring work in the West Side of Shetland was done according to the the tides; a sowing custom.
Voar [spring] work and even activities like the setting of a hen with a clutch of eggs, were best undertaken at certain tides, owing to the moon's influence. Sowing customs varied from place to place, but an egg or small Shetland brunie [oatcake] was often placed at the bottom of the straw seed keshie [basket] to improve fertility. Jimmy Johnson is not sure what was done with the brunie after sowing was over.
