Summary

This song creates a picture of the battlefield at Inverlochy and the piping of black-haired Donald. It mentions the banners on the battlefield, and tells how the Macintoshes escaped and how clan MacDonald held their ground.

Item Notes

5 quatrains sung. This song is connected to two pipe tunes, a ceòl mòr tune and a 6/8 march, both of which are called 'Pìobaireachd Dhòmhnaill Dhuibh' or 'Black Donald's March'. The story of the song goes back to the Battle of Inverlochy, where the Lord of the Isles' army and the army of King James I met in 1431. The MacDonalds were the victors and this song is a victory song for the MacDonalds, although it is now more associated with the Clan Cameron.
