Summary

Farm workers' contractual conditions in East Lothian in the late 19th century.

Farm workers' contracts ran from one 28th May [the 'term day'] till the next. When hiring, farmers could identify farm workers looking for work by the fact that they were standing with one or two women and a lad. Every man on the farm had to bring a worker. Mrs Dobson's father had two workers (his daughters) and a son. A young boy would drive an odd horse. A bigger chap would be hired to drive a pair.
