Harmonious life on late 19th century East Lothian farms.
Life was more enjoyable in Mrs Dobson's youth; people had to make their own sport [i.e. entertainment] and it was very harmonious and sociable. The farmers were sociable, and gave presents at Christmas, e.g. a currant loaf and shortbread, with sweets and fruit, or sometimes money for the children. The farmers worked alongside their farmservants when needed.
