Summary
How 'Sgrìob Liath an Earraich' got the butter.
It was customary to store butter during the summer and autumn to see them through the scarcity of 'Sgrìob Liath an Earraich' ["the grey journey/scrape of spring" or similar]. One housewife put the butter aside, and one day she had to go out. She left the house in the care of her daughter. A poor old man came to the door. She asked him if he was Sgrìob Liath an Earraich, and he said that he was. She gave him the butter and off he went.
