Summary
Fish-traps made illegal; fishing out of Bunessan for local consumption.
Fish-traps were formerly used on Mull and elsewhere in the Highlands. Donald Morrison spells the Gaelic word for these: 'cara'. There is one at Bunessan between the shore and a rock in the bay. They were built of heavy stones by the township, and used to catch salmon and other fish. They were made illegal before Mr Morrison's time and knocked down. There was fishing out of Bunessan in his time, for herring, cod, white fish and lobster, mostly for local consumption. Crofters and cottars fished.
