Summary

The collecting and use of seaweed as fertiliser.

Seaweed is still [1960] used occasionally, although commercial fertilisers have become more common. Seaweed was cut on rocks in the sea and brought home by boat. This seaweed was known as 'dearg-thodhar', and was left to rot in a pile known as a 'brìg', and subsequently used as potato fertiliser. Seaweed was sometimes dragged ashore with a rope tied behind a boat.
