Summary
Rolling eggs after church on Easter Day.
At Easter Miss MacAllister's mother boiled eggs from their own hens and the children rolled them after church on Easter Sunday. Some children had painted eggs. They raced the eggs down the Hillhead Brae, where the local butcher used to keep cattle awaiting slaughter. They also had small chocolate eggs. There were several sweetie shops in the village [Balfron] and a penny went a long way. They had no special meal at Easter, but bought hot cross buns from the baker's on Good Friday. Mothering Sunday and Shrove Tuesday were not observed.
