Summary
Dances in the village hall at Kirkcowan.
Sometimes at summer dances in the village hall in Kirkcowan there was a waltz competition. Margaret Muir names the judges. At village dances even if a couple were courting the man and girl sat at opposite sides of the hall. The sexes were always separated except when actually dancing. Sometimes there was a written-out programme of dances, and a man could book certain dances with a particular girl. Having the last dance meant taking the girl home. The first dance was usually a waltz country dance. Other popular dances were quadrilles, Lancers, the eightsome reel, the waltz cotillion and the Circassian Circle.
