Summary

Spreading the seaweed for lazy-beds.

When spreading seaweed for lazy-beds, about six inches are left clear at each side of each five foot strip so that the cas-chrom can be effectively used. The seaweed is usually spread by hand as it can be done more evenly than with a graip. Seaweed can be left lying after spreading for several days, depending on the weather. The older generation used to let it lie till it got rotten and red. They also left it in a heap for some time before spreading. Cut seaweed and not drift wrack is always used, but some now get lorry loads of drift seaweed brought from Benbecula.
