Reporters - Hamish Henderson

Summary - A farmer had no luck after chasing away little men who were stealing from his grain-store.

A farmer had noticed that his girnel [grain-chest] was getting empty very quickly, so he hid one night to see what was happening. Little men came in through a knot-hole, lifted the lid of the girnel, and each took an ear of corn. They went out chanting a rhyme saying that the farmer did not know what they knew. The farmer chased them, but did not catch them. They did not come back, but nothing went well on the farm after that and the farmer gave up his farm because of it.

Capt. Macpherson heard this from old farm labourer at Coldingham in late 1920s or early 1930s.
