Summary - A deserter was shot at Bell Hill.

Jack Cockburn heard from his grandmother, Margaret Dodds of Fellcleugh, that a man was shot against the wall at Bell Hill on the old Edinburgh to London road just before Coldingham Moor. Years later he discovered the details of this in a book called 'The Narrative of Paul Swanston'. A deserter was being escorted by a sergeant and a corporal from the barracks at Haddington to his unit south of the border for punishment. On the way up Bell Hill the prisoner made a bid to escape, but was recaptured and shot.
