Summary - Early employment and composing songs.

The contributor talks about his early employment as a cowherd. He earned twenty-five shillings as a wage for three to four months' work. He was twelve-and-a-half years old at the time. He composed a song, sung here, describing his early hardships.

His mother died when he was just seven years old. He started composing poems and songs when he was very young. His uncle Angus built the church in Berneray and worked at Dunblane Cathedral. This uncle took the contributor to Balmartin.
