Contributors - Dave West
Reporters - Professor Gary West

Summary - Neighbour help between Perthshire farms; help given to a widowed farmer's wife.

Dave West recalls once being sent, when he was a farm worker, to a neighbouring farm to help with the leading in [carting] of the corn (oats). This was in the 1940s, but such help was unusual by then. There was an old custom called a 'love darg', whereby anybody who needed help was given it. Gary West tries to establish whether this would apply particularly to a newly-arrived family. He reminds Dave about an instance he mentioned previously, when a farmer's wife was widowed and others did the ploughing for her.
