Calendar customs: Johnsmas, Fastern's Een, Bogel Day and Lammas.
Johnsmas was celebrated on 25th June with hillside bonfires and dancing. Milgruel, made with milk and sweetened with sugar, was eaten. The contributor relates certain rituals associated with Johnsmas. Dutch fishermen always came ashore to celebrate. A mound south of Lerwick is called the Hollanders Knowe.
Fastern's Een [Shrove Tuesday] was celebrated with the baking of special cakes. Bogel Day was the last day in March and every family member got a bogel cake. The day marked the start of spring planting and also foretold the weather. Lammas Day was the start of harvest and was marked with a sweet biscuit.
