Summary
The song has three main subjects. It praises the MacKenzies and William MacKenzie (Uilleam Dubh), the fifth earl and marquess of Seaforth. It lists friendly clans who would rise with the MacKenzies. There is also a satirical account of the 'Alness affair' (October 1715) when Uilleam Dubh's Jacobite army dispersed the Whig army under the command of the Earl of Sutherland. According to the song, the Earl ran home.
Item Notes
In 'Sàr-Obair nam Bàrd Gaelach' the composer of the song is said to be Tormod Bàn MacLeòid (Norman MacLeod) from Lochbroom (fl. 1716 - 1744). However, there is a view that the composer could have been Murdoch Matheson from Kintail (c. 1670 - c. 1757).
