Summary
The girl who stayed a night in a haunted castle.
A man in America had a castle. He advertised for a woman who would stay in another castle for a night to look after it. A Skye girl went over. He told her there was light there and books she could read. She duly went there. At midnight she heard a noise. Later, the head of a grey-haired man appeared on the stair. She kept on reading. The ghost told her not to be afraid. He told her his son had brought her there. All the girls who had been brought before had dropped dead at the sight of him. He told her he was buried near the castle, and that she was to ask the man to lift his father's bones and bury them properly. At the foot of the stairs was a stone, which he was to lift. There was a chest of gold there. She was to have a third of it.
The next day, the son came and saw the girl was alive, much to his surprise. She told him she had seen his father, who had been killed in the castle, and explained what the ghost had said. If the man did not follow his father's instructions, the castle would remain haunted. He did exactly as he had been told. The girl got her share of the gold and returned home to Skye.

Bha nighean Sgitheanach ann co-dhiù agus chaidh i a-null ann, agus fhuair i far an robh an duine agus dh'innis e dhi:
"Ò," ars esan, "tha caisteal agam ann a shiud," ars esan, "agus chan eil duine a' fuireach ann. Agus ma bhios tu airson," ars esan, "an obair a ghabhail," ars esan, "bheir mi dhut i, agus cha bhi sìon agad ri dhèanamh ach suidhe fad na h-oidhche," ars esan, "agus an aire a thoirt dhan chaisteal," ars esan. "Agus gheibh thu solas gu leòr," ars esan, "coinnlean, agus leabhraichean, agus cha bhi agad ach a bhith gan leughadh."
Agus: "Glè mhath," ars ise, "ma-thà. Gabhaidh mi an obair."
Dh'fhalbh i agus a' chiad oidhche, chaidh i dhan chaisteal co-dhiù. Bha i a' sìor leughadh, 's na coinnlean laiste, agus seachad suas air a' mheadhan-oidhche chuala i, 'Tump!' Ò uill, cha do shaoil i sìon dheth. Bha dùil aice gur e rudeigin eile a bh' ann. Agus... Ò bha sin a' dol treiseag. Ach, eadar sin 's a dhà 's a trì sa mhadainn, nochd ceann mòr liath a-mach tron staidhre. Cha do leig i oirre gum faca i e. Chùm i oirre a' leughadh.
"Na gabh eagal," ars esan. "Tha mi a' tuigsinn," ars esan, "gur e boireannach math a th' annad."
"Cha ghabh," ars ise.
"Uill," ars esan, "on a fhuair mise duine a bhruidhneadh rium," ars esan, "tha mi a' dol a bhruidhinn riut a-nochd," ars esan.
"Glè mhath," ars ise.
"Chuir mo mhac," ars esan, "ann an seo thu," ars esan, "airson," ars esan, "an aire a thoirt dhan chaisteal a bh' ann. 'S ann agamsa a bha an caisteal a bha seo," ars esan. "Agus bha e," ars esan, "a' gabhail nigheanan a-staigh a h-uile h-oidhche airson," ars esan, "an aire thoirt dhan chaisteal. Tha àite aigesan dha fhèin," ars esan, "caisteal eile. Agus a h-uile nighean a bha a' tighinn ann," ars esan, "air a bha iad gam fhaicinn-sa a' tighinn," ars esan, "bha iad a' tuiteam marbh. Ach," ars esan, "'s e nighean mhath a th' annadsa. Agus innsidh tu dham mhac a-màireach," ars esan, "g' eil mise tiodhlaicte ann an gnoban beag uaine air beulaibh a' chaisteil ann an seo. Agus e a dhèanamh, cho luath 's a rinn e riamh, na cnàmhan agam a thogail agus an tiodhlacadh dòigheil," ars esan. "Agus thèid thu sìos air an staidhre," ars esan. "Tha flag mòr de chloich ann," ars esan, "agus togadh e am flag a tha sin," ars esan, "agus tha ciste òir ann. Agus leatsa gach treas bonn dheth. Agus mura bi sin ann," ars esan, "bidh tathaich air a' chaisteal mar a bha riamh ann. Mura dèan e an rud a dh'iarras mise air."
Tha sin ceart gu leòr. An làrna-mhàireach anns a' mhadainn, air a shoilleirich i, thàinig an gille chun a' chaisteil, mac a' bhodaich.
"Tha thu beò," ars esan.
"Tha," ars ise. "An robh thu a' smaointinn nach bithinn beò?"
"Uill, bha mi a' smaointinn nach bitheadh," ars esan. "A h-uile gin riamh a thàinig an seo," ars esan, "bha iad marbh romhamsa anns a' mhadainn."
"Ò, bhithinn-sa," ars ise, "marbh cuideachd," ars ise, "mura bitheadh an seòrsa boireannaich a bh' annam. Bheil fhios agad," ars ise, "gum faca mise d' athair a-raoir?"
"Am faca?" ars esan.
"Chunnaic," ars ise. "'S e d' athair," ars ise, "a chaidh a mharbhadh ann an seo, anns a' chaisteal seo," ars ise.
"Seadh," ars esan.
"Agus tha e air a thiodhlacadh ann an gnoban beag uaine a tha air beulaibh a' chaisteil ann an seo. Agus dh'iarr e ormsa a-raoir iarraidh ort – ars esan – a chnàmhan a thogail agus a thiodhlacadh anns a' chladh. Agus shìos fon staidhre, thuirt e, tha flag mòr de chloich ann," ars ise, "agus tha drong: ciste òir ann a shin," ars ise, "agus leamsa gach treas bonn dhen sin," ars ise. "Agus mura bi sin ceart," ars ise, "bidh tathaich air a' chaisteal mar a bha riamh ann."
Thionndaidh e a-mach, agus chruinnich e daoine agus chladhaich iad an cnoc. Agus bha cnàmhan athar ann a shin agus thiodhlaic iad anns a' chladh e. Agus thog e am flag a bha air beulaibh na staidhre 's bha a' chiste òir ann, agus roinn e gach treas bonn air a' bhoireannach sin. Agus b' ann de mhuinntir an Eilein Sgitheanaich a bha i. Agus thill i dhachaigh.
Dhealaich mise ris.
