Summary
Wintering township bulls in Kyles Paible, North Uist.
Townships bought bulls from Balranald farm until the Board of Agriculture began their loan scheme. Bulls were then wintered in the township or at the farm and every crofter had to spend thirteen days in lieu for this task. In the old days, most bulls were bred on Balranald and Vallay farms. The Board also bought their beasts there: they were all Highland bulls. Many townships wintered the bulls themselves, particularly if there were plenty crofters to provide feeding. John MacDonald can remember a man being paid by the township to tend the bull in the winter. He went to a different crofter every day for a quantity of feed. The herd was usually employed for this work. Each croft counted as one unit for cattle feed, even if it was divided among several people.
