Summary

Drovers used to bring cattle from great distances to the Falkirk Tryst in the days before the railways.

Drovers brought black and Highland cattle from as far away as Sutherland to the Falkirk Tryst. They used hill tracks, such as the one from Glenlyon to Loch Tay. They passed through Strathyre, which was known as 'Nineveh'. This was because according to the Bible it took nine days to cross the city of Nineveh, and it took nine days for the drovers to cross Strathyre, spending a night in each of its nine inns. Droving stopped once the railways came. At one time the railway only came as far as Falkirk, and salmon netted in the Tay were taken there to be sold.
