Summary
The Horseman's Word from a farmer's viewpoint.
John Strachan was not a 'made horseman' and does not believe that getting the Word made a man a good horseman. He mentions a man, Jimmy Smith, who was in charge of a meeting. Another man, one of Mr Strachan's farmservants, tried to make the horse follow him and was nearly eaten alive for his pains. One local farmer joined in for the 'spree': the Devil's handshake was with a hot shovel round Fyvie. There was a lot of rough horseplay. There was a hand-grip for recognition.
