Summary
Two tramps heard chains rattling in a barn where a farmer had hanged himself.
Two tramps, a man and wife, got lodgings for the night at a big farm near Ellon. They were trying to get to sleep in the barn, but were kept awake by the sound of chains rattling. The man went to see whether the farmservants were playing a trick on them, but they were all in bed asleep. The noises in the barn continued, and there was a loud thump. At this the couple left and went to a cottar house down the road. When the cottar heard what had happened, he told them the barn was haunted by the ghost of a farmer who had hanged himself there years before. The thump was the body falling.
