An American millionaire promised to marry the girl he would recognise by her wearing a rose.

An American millionaire fell in love with a photograph of an English girl and wrote asking her to marry him. She agreed, and he said he would come over to England and when she came to meet him on the quay she was to wear a red rose so that he would recognise her. They missed each other, and the girl, feeling annoyed, gave away the red rose to a poor mill girl. The mill girl pinned the rose to her shawl, and the millionaire saw her. He promised to marry her, even although the other girl arrived and explained who she was.
