Summary

A woman saved her child from a kelpie by cutting off his finger; loch full of dangerous waterweed.

The former resident of Brin House, Strathnairn, a Mr Stewart, pointed out to Dr Grant a tiny lochan where a kelpie was supposed to live. There was a story that a woman whose child touched the beautiful horse had saved him by cutting off his finger.

One of Mr Stewart's spaniels, though a good water-dog, once got into serious difficulties retrieving a duck from the kelpie loch. The keeper tried to restrain Mr Stewart, but he went into the water and recued the dog with a great deal of difficulty. The loch was infested with dangerous clinging waterweed.
