Summary

This waulking song, as sung here, has three sections. In the first, the composer describes her sadness which began on Saturday. She seems to be referring to the death of a loved one. The second section begins: "James sent men to take me captive." In the final section, the composer wishes for twelve strong men. The words say: "I would be in Duntulm before I slept / Seumas Bàn would never stir afterwards / I would leave his mother without a son / And his young wife without a husband."

Disathairne ghabh mi mulad
Hao ri iù o hao ri iù o
Didòmhnaich a ghabh mi uil' e
Hao rì iu ò hoilibh ò
Hì o challa bhi riù bhi hù o hù o
Didòmhnaich a ghabh mi uil' e
'S ann Diluain a rinn mi 'n tuiream
Chunna mi bhith gabhail umad
Gabhail mun bheul a bha cuimir
Dùnadh nan sùil a bha lurach
'S a' seòladh gu tìr an dubh-bhròin* [*tìr a' mhurain, mar as trice]
Far nach cluinntear aon ghuth duine
Fuaim a' challtainn ris a' chuileann
'S fuaim an t-sìobain ris a' mhuran
Och nan och b' e latha dubh e
'S chuir Seumas daoine gam ghlacadh
Bu bheag a ruigeadh e leas e
Cha b' e mhèirle fhuaradh agam
Ma fhuaras feòil aig mo chasan
Ma fhuair cha d' fhuaras feòil bhradach
Gruagach òg an cirb mo bhreacain
Iseabail dhonn an fhuilt chlannaich
'S deirg a gruaidh na cuach air chrannaibh
Ach nam faighinn siud air m' fhacal
Dà reug de ghillean tapaidh
Bhithinn an Dùn Tuilm mun caidlinn
'S dh'fhàgainn Seumas Bàn gun astar
Dh'fhàgainn a mhàthair gun mhac dheth
'S a bhean òg gun chèile leapa
