Summary

The Laird of Drum is out hunting when he sees a pretty girl shearing barley, and he asks if she would be Lady of the Drum. She says no but tells him to ask her father. He asks her father for his daughter's hand but he points out that she has been trained for farming and not as a lady. Drum says the baker and brewer will do the bread and drink. She is snubbed by the ladies and gentleman of Drum and his brother upbraids him. Drum says she is Lady of Drum. When they are in their graves, no one can tell whose bones are whose.

Mrs Morrison learned the song from her father, James Shand, who had the croft at Ballindalloch, now worked by Alec.

Item Notes

13 verses. Fairly full version of the ballad, but unusual in that it suggests that the Laird has the 'graves' verse and not his wife.
