Gregory, the son of a poor nobleman, was left in the care of a rich relation when his father died. The rich relation had a daughter, Matilda. Gregory and Matilda fell in love, and met secretly in a cave. Matilda refused all offers of marriage from other suitors. When her father found out that she was meeting Gregory secretly, he had him banished to America. When he had been away for about a year, Matilda went to the cave where they used to meet. The ghost of Gregory appeared to her, mortally wounded and without the ring that she had given him. He had been killed in a war in America. Matilda pined to death.
