Summary

How the contributor's great-grandmother stopped a cattle thief.

There was a cattle thief in Inverary when the contributor's great-grandmother was a dairymaid to the Duke of Argyll. She stayed in the barn one night to see if she could catch the thief. Two men came in, with one of them putting his hand in the cows' mouths to test their health. When he came to the dairymaid, he put his finger in her mouth and she bit it off. The men fled and in the morning she showed the duke the finger. He identified the thief by his missing finger. He was a local farmer. She married a man named Black from Lismore and they moved to Tiree as he was a servant to Dr MacLaren who was the factor there. She was a powerful woman who was not afraid of anything.
