Summary
Gender roles in Traveller communities.
When first married, young women in Traveller communities often had 'wild' husbands, and domestic violence was not uncommon. As they aged, women learned how to wield greater authority, and were looked to for guidance and discipline. The men got quieter with age. Examples of discipline are given. Discussion of the powers of intuition possessed by Traveller women. Sons were often considered more valuable than daughters, e.g. for protecting the camp.
