Unless there is contemporary information about who composed a song it is almost impossible to say which is the original version. People from various parts of the country will claim that theirs is the original. Ewan MacColl gives as an example the song known variously in different places as 'Seventeen come Sunday', 'As I Went Out Ae May Morning', and 'The Trooper and the Maid'. The study of folksong has become a kind of comparative science.
