Summary

Water kelpies explained, and discussion of Picts.

Wild ducks feeding in the mire [bog] would fly up when they got scared, and this broke the iron-ore [ferric oxide] on the surface and disturbed the phosphorus. That was the older people's witches. The origin of the fairies in Scotland was the Picts, who were small people and only came out at night and danced. The Mundies of Stromness were the last of them. Charles 'Codlins' Simpson recalls one of them, who was a small man with a massive head. It is said that when he had to cross the burn [stream] to the church, his wife carried him. Discussion of the admixture of other peoples with the Picts.
